Hello,
I hope you’re having a lovely start to the week.
I just wanted to send a quick email today to say, first of all, a big welcome to the Seasonal Retreat Community! I can’t wait for our first online retreat week in September and I’m so happy you’ll be joining us for that.
But as that’s still a little way off I also wanted to write to you today to let you know a little about the next Full Moon on the horizon, as it’s a pretty special one.
August’s Full Moon will fall on the 19th August which is exactly a week today (give or take depending on your time zone) and it’s the first Supermoon of the year. So it's well worth keeping an eye out for.
It also kicks of an amazing run of Supermoons, as the Full Moons in September, October and November are all also classified as Supermoons. That’s an awful lot of strong lunar energy headed our way!
Great, but what’s a Supermoon?
A Supermoon is a Full Moon that happens when the Moon is at its closest point to us, so it looks bigger and brighter than usual. I’ll hand over to BBC Science Focus for the detail on this as they have a nice, clear way of explaining it:
“The Moon orbits the Earth in an ellipse, which is why the Moon’s distance away from us varies throughout the year. When the Moon reaches its closest point to us, this is called lunar perigee. When it’s furthest away from us, it’s known as lunar apogee. If perigee occurs close to a full Moon, the Moon looks bigger and brighter – and we see a supermoon.1
What does this mean for me?
A Supermoon has all the power of a Full Moon, plus a little extra. Supermoons are thought to cause higher than usual tides, (sometimes called Supermoon tides) and it follows that they are also likely to have a powerful effect on our own bodies and energy levels too.
So I highly recommend marking next week’s Full Moon on your calendar and tapping in to some of that extra powerful lunar energy as we lead up to it. If you have a project you want to complete, a goal you’ve been working towards, or if you just want to pick a good time to socialise with friends and family, now is your moment!
If you’re new to Lunar Living and Full Moon energy, do take at this guide to Lunar Living from my archives. (Which I’ve just noticed I sent out almost exactly a year ago. How’s that for serendipitous timing.)
And finally…
The August Full Moon has many beautiful Folklore names which I thought you might enjoy. It’s most commonly known as the Sturgeon Moon which refers to the late-Summer fishing season in Native American culture. But the Celts were thought to have called it the Dispute Moon and Lynx Moon, and the Anglo-Saxons the Grain Moon, the Corn Moon or the Lightning Moon.2
And on that note, I wish you all a bright and energetic run up to the Full Moon next week.
Take care,
Vicky xx
