Blackberries have a special place in my heart! As a kid we use to pick blackberries along the hedgerows in Kent - the best ones were of course deep in the bush - the scratches were worth it! Then we’d play blackberry roulette - eat one and if sweet you would get another go, if sour you would miss a go! 😆 shop bought simply don’t taste the same !
Thank you for this goodness, Victoria. I must go find some blackberries now! Where I am, in New Mexico USA, your blackberry season equates to our green chile season. We begin to harvest this magical delight (that we end up putting in and on everything we eat for the rest of the year) about now, and then in the coming weeks the whole state fills with the unbelievable aroma of green chile roasting over open flames. Trust me, it's worth a trip to this desert region. But for today, I'm off on a blackberry hunt!
This is lovely! I will certainly be trying out some of those blackberry combinations and will let you know if I think of some more. Our brambles aren’t quite out yet but the raspberries are in full flow and the blaeberries have emerged! ❤️
This helps me with the same debate that I have with myself every year. Is blackberry a summer or autumn fruit. Turns out its both! It's a relief not to have to decide.
Funny how I came accross your text tonight after eating my first blackberries of the season earlier this evening. Delightful. The berries and the reading.
You are bang on with your observations that blackberries can be either the epitome of mid-summer, or bring that cozy autumnal vibe. I'm lucky to have my own blackberry patch and can pick at my leisure. What a gift. I'm currently picking the ripest, juiciest ones every few days, rinsing, freezing on a sheet pan, then popping in a ziplock for future jam making.
I’m a huge fan of blackberry picking! These weeks across late summer are my favourite harvests, thumb & forefinger stained from picking these delicious fruits, and getting ready to tug the apples from our tree. Overhanging boughs with damsons will be cajoled into jam & our fig tree has been generous with the odd ripe fruit here and there.
Yes, we only planted our fig tree three years ago and already we reap rewards..I regularly use the large palm- like leaves to dress a board of cheese & a recent post from @kitchenprojects waxes lyrical as to the myriad of ways to use them in the kitchen.
You’ve inspired me to rustle up a blackberry butter cake this afternoon, thank you :) x
What a beautiful read to start the morning. And I never knew that about the first blackberries.... I'll leave them for the fairy folk from now on!
Thanks Jo! That's very kind. And I know... I've become incredibly superstitious about not eating the first blackberries now, just in case! 😁

Love this! And yes the best ones are always the hardest to reach, but worth the scratches when you do!

Oh that sounds amazing! I love the sound of that. Eating anything when it’s fresh and in season is always great 💫
Blackberry gin or brandy 😍
Ooh yes! 🍹

It’s the best time of the year! (Although I say that about every season 😆) And I can highly recommend the blackberry cobbler recipe 🥧

It is absolutely both. Can be eaten happily in either season! 😁
Blackberries were on sale at Costco yesterday and so cheap I couldn't pass it up. Now I have something to great to make. Thank you for posting!
Excellent! Hope you got to make something lovely 💫

They’re shape shifters aren’t they! Lucky you to have your own blackberry patch, sounds fantastic 💫
