I'm in the northern US and we have Great Horned Owls in our neighborhood. We tend to hear them in the pre-dawn hours. It's really lovely to hear them softly hooting just as you're emerging from sleep.

I have never noticed owls as much as this year. They live in the trees in our garden and call through the night sometimes keeping my daughter awake because her room overlooks them. It's a sound that never fails to get my attention.

The same here! I’ve lived in the countryside so many times, but never heard the owls as much as this year.

First year I've heard a local tawny owl several nights in a row. He also made his way into my dream which was pretty cool! Or maybe its not an owl at all, maybe it's my neighbour. That news story is great! I wonder how they worked it out 🤣

I always have a moment of wondering if it’s actually an owl or a neighbour now 🤣

I love to hear the owls at the moment, I always bid them a good night. A couple of nights ago I heard a Barn Owls strange hissing call as it flew overhead. Now that does make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.

I love hearing owls! I live on an island off the west coast of Canada and lately there's been a Great Horned Owl in my neighbourhood. I hear him sometimes at night, sometimes at dawn. It always feels magical to me when I hear him hooting.

There is something magical about the Tawny Owl and I love hearing them. I've noticed they call at dawn here as well as dusk. Perhaps they're just ramping up the Halloween vibes 🎃🦉

Beautifully written - like a story itself! I don’t usually hear them in my urban dwelling but I’ve seen/heard them a few times at my parents and it’s magic every time! ✨

One year, we were lucky to have a pair of baby owls living in our neighborhood. Mostly, though, we hear/see barred owls on our daily walks at the park. Now I want to make a Linocut of an owl…

Yes, one year we saw and heard two young owls romancing each other. Unforgettable!

I'm very lucky to have a couple of breeds of owls out the front and back of the house (South Wales UK), I love hearing the tweet tooo between the two out the back, I often lie in the bath and listen. I do find the one out the front who hoots in the night scary though!

Magical post, Vicky!! I just love the haunting sounds and presence of owls. I cannot think of an owl without being aware of the deep, silent wisdom I believe they possess. Flying over us, sharing messages from otherworldly places, bringing a sense of mystery and power to the nights. 🖤

I've been hearing a pair of Great Horned Owls recently, here in BC. I was lucky enough to see and photography them just a week ago too - something that occurs maybe once in a decade. So blessed.

I literally wrote this comment, and thought I heard a single 'hoot'... I went outside to investigate and found the pair of GHO in a tree, settling in for a nap. Wow.

What a beautiful post, you capture the magnificence and the magic of the owl so wonderfully. I am feeling very envious of these magnificent owl experiences! I have never seen one in the wild and in North London I don’t think there are many opportunities to, though we do have a lot of woodland close by... I was once told that my spirit animal is an owl (!) whatever that may mean…! xx

Ah I would love for an Owl to be my spirit animal! That's brilliant. I fear my spirit animal would be more like a dormouse or something 😂

The owls have started their nightly calls here too, I absolutely love it, I open the windows whatever the weather so I can hear them more clearly from the comfort of my arm chair. An annual highlight in my opinion.

Oooh I love this! I've always been fascinated by owls. We used to hear little owls call to each other in the fields near our home in France. They look and sound very cute. More recently we've heard barn owls, and they sound more like someone is being murdered in the woods.
