I do love your book list with many titles new to me! Calm Christmas and Christmas Chronicles are my cherished reads in this period together with Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher📖❄️🌟☕️🫖
Currently reading Winter Solstice, my go to this time of year. Just so comforting at a time when life is busy! Also love Calm Christmas, reading that really made me rethink and let go of the feeling of obligation Christmas can involve!
Last year I read The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper for the first time. It's set beginning on December 20th and I listened to a chapter a day of the BBC production from then until the new year (apparently lots of people do this around the world - it's a great slow-read). This year, I've started with the first book in the series, (Over Sea, Under Stone) so I can continue the full series after my slow-read of the Dark is Rising. The first book is decidedly not wintery, but The Dark is Rising works perfectly well as a standalone anyway. I definitely recommend it.
I have been re-reading this book at Midwinter for at least 30 years! It was a present from my gran and I’ve given it to every niece/nephew as they’ve reached 11. Last year I bought it for my sons’ partners ❤️ My resolution was to read the whole series again once I’ve finished this year’s delve. I didn’t know it was available to listen to (can you tell how excited I was to find it in the comments….😄)
What a great list! I’ve read a couple of them but I’ll be checking out the others for sure. I read The Bear & The Nightingale a few years ago and it was another great winter read. Also—A Muppet Christmas Carol is one of my all-time favorites!
I vividly remember watching the BBC adaptation of the Box of Delights as a child, so much so, I made my kids watch it 😂 I had the book too, but it's a hard one to find here in the US.
Love some of these too! The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaardner is another good one. Making Winter by Emma Mitchell, The Light in the Dark by Horatio Clare, Village Christmas by Laurie Lee, A Winter Book by Tove Jansson and A Child's Christmas in Wales are all books that get another airing with me at christmas an winter time. I also love vintage crime set at Christmas and also a book of Christmas related facts called Can Reindeer Fly? by Roger Highfield
This is a lovely list, and I'll definitely be getting a couple, especially The Shortest Day! I'd probably add The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (of course, or better still the BBC
Audio adaption), The Secret Garden, and Making Winter by Emma Mitchell (anyone remember following her for years on IG as SilverPebble?)
I really love several meant for children books at this time of year
The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy Boston
The Box of Delights by John Masefield and best of all
Thr Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
Deliciously dark and full of foreboding it runs from the longest day through Christmas, New Year and finishes on Twelfth Night. Fabulous for a damily read but I enjoy it just myself xx
Wintering has been on my wishlist for a while, so I'm busy making a big list with all the suggestions here.
I have to add The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as a great winter read. Most of my favourite wintery books are kids picture books that are a hang over from homeschooling my kids. So to that, I will add Strega Nona's Christmas and suggest anyone wanting some fun kids books look up Tomie dePaola who had a bunch of good ones, and Jan Brett who did too.
A Christmas Carol has always been a favourite - Dickens actually has quite a few other Christmas stories too, and they often come in a book with it, which is nice.
Thank you for the book recommendations, several new to me! Marvellous, I'll have to check them out, especially Dark Skies.
I'll love wintery books or in general those set in snow and ice! Recently, I discovered A Winter Dictionary: A Collection of Words for the Festive Season by Paul Anthony Jones. Makes a fun and interesting read! An all-time favourite of mine is Two Old Women by Velma Wallis. (More here, if you are interested: https://claudiakollschen.substack.com/p/my-love-for-snow-and-ice)
Watching The Muppets Christmas Carol is also a beloved tradition for me. The soundtrack is already playing since the end of November. 😇
Love this list (and reading in winter). Some books I have already read and would also recommend and some I am adding to my TBR list. Re-reading Wintering at the moment. And also reading Christmas at the Bookshop, a lovely and cozy Christmas story 😊

Thanks for the Rosamunde Pilcher suggestion, that's on my list now! ❄️
I read Winter Solstice last year. Such a great book with all the cozy vibes.
I'm a huge Winter Solstice fan too

Oh this is on my list! And that’s such a great way to listen to it.

Can't beat A Muppet's Christmas Carol
Dark Matter by Michelle Paver and the Box of Delights by John Masefield are two that I often reread at this time of year!
Noted, thank you!
I vividly remember watching the BBC adaptation of the Box of Delights as a child, so much so, I made my kids watch it 😂 I had the book too, but it's a hard one to find here in the US.

This is an excellent list of Wintry books, thank you!!
I've got Making Winter, it's a gorgeous book isn't it.
Love 'A Winter Book'...almost as much as 'The Summer Book'...🧡

* shortest day !!
Children's books are often the best at this time of year! The Dark is Rising is now top of my list.

Those sound lovely, thanks for the recommendations. And very happy you're also a fan of the Muppets Christmas Carol!
There is nothing better than reading a winter themed book, cuddled with blanket and coffee. Thank you for the great suggestions!
Jostein Gaarder's The Christmas Mystery is a thought-provoking read...I used to read a chapter a day to my kids throught advent
So gorgeous, a list I will be bookmarking for many years to come, thank you Vicky xx
I found The Snow Child and The Shortest Day at the library. Thanks for the list!
What a wonderful list. There's a couple on there I have already and a few I'll be ordering from my local bookshop 📚
An interesting list of books Vicky for the Cosy Book Club. Thank you.
My recommendation is Merry Midwinter by Gillian Monks.
It’s all about rediscovering the Magic of the Christmas Season ✨
I really enjoy Merry Midwinter each year too 🤍
Love this list (and reading in winter). Some books I have already read and would also recommend and some I am adding to my TBR list. Re-reading Wintering at the moment. And also reading Christmas at the Bookshop, a lovely and cozy Christmas story 😊
Thank you 🙏
That sounds perfect. Have added that to my ever-growing list! 😊
I think I need to winter a long time 🙈
